Can You Pressure Wash Aluminum Siding, or Will It Cause More Problems?

This comes up constantly on older Metro East homes: siding that's gone chalky and dull, sometimes with a powdery residue that rubs off on your hand. The question homeowners ask is almost always the same: can you just pressure wash it, or does that make things worse?

The honest answer is it depends on the condition of the siding, and getting it wrong on aluminum specifically can leave you with bigger problems than you started with.

Why aluminum siding chalks in the first place

That powdery, faded look is oxidation. The factory finish on aluminum siding breaks down under UV exposure over years, and the surface starts shedding a fine white or gray dust. It's not dirt sitting on top -- it's the finish itself degrading. That distinction matters for what you should do about it.

When pressure washing is fine

If the siding is structurally sound, the seams are tight, and the chalking is light to moderate, a controlled wash at the right pressure and distance will lift surface grime, pollen, and light oxidation without doing damage. The keyword is controlled -- a wide fan tip held at a consistent distance, not a narrow jet blasted up close.

When it isn't

• Heavy oxidation. If the chalking is thick, high pressure can strip more finish than intended and leave blotchy, uneven color.
• Loose or lifted seams. Aluminum panels that have started to separate at the joints will let water behind the siding under pressure, which leads to trapped moisture and rot in the sheathing behind it.
• Any sign of prior painting. Painted aluminum siding is a different animal -- pressure can peel the paint in sheets rather than clean it.

Will it need to be painted afterward?

Cleaning alone won't restore faded color if the oxidation has gone deep -- it'll look better and more uniform, but not new. If the goal is a like-new finish rather than just clean, painting is the honest next step. A wash first is still worth it either way, since paint won't bond well over chalky residue.
